Hernando authorities say they've arrested a woman on animal cruelty charges after finding 50 cats and three dogs inside an abandoned U-haul truck parked behind a Publix store near the county line of Pasco Tuesday.

Authorities euthanized 39 of the seized cats who were the sickest among the seized pets.

Frances Terry Evans, age 52, had been ordered by Pasco County Code Enforcement officers to surrender most of the animals by Tuesday.

But Pasco investigators say they discovered that Evans had hidden the animals inside plastic "Tupperware" type containers inside the truck to avoid complying with that order.

They contacted Hernando authorities to help respond to the situation and provide emergency medical care at the Hernando Animal Shelter.

"Many of then had defecated and urinated over themselves in very poorly ventilated containers," said the Managing Veterinarian of the Hernando Animal Shelter, Dr. Lisa Centonze.

"Most of them were suffering from upper respiratory infections, parasites like fleas and ear mites," Centonze said. "Many of them had skin lesions and they ere mostly unsocialized."

The vet said she hopes people will step forward to adopt the eleven surviving cats and three dogs seized from the truck.

Evans is in the Pasco County Jail under a $26,500 bond and faces 53 counts of animal cruelty. Pasco deputies arrested her after Hernando investigators conferred with prosecutors.

"Because she abandoned them in the hot U-haul," said Hernando Sheriff's spokeswoman Denise Maloney.

Evans also faces civil fines of up to $26,500 for abandoning the animals in the U-haul truck.
