Don't do this on Memorial Day weekend - WRBL

Don't do this if you're out of town this Memorial Day weekend

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

For years police have reminded holiday travelers of what to do to secure their homes before they leave, but these days there is a new tip for what not to do - don't let the world know where you are.

Leaving lights on and having someone collect newspapers and mail so it doesn't pile up are standard ways to deter would-be burglars by making it look like someone is home.

But with the rise of social media, none of that does any good if you're posting details online about being away from home.

Thieves can easily see what you post on sites such as Facebook and Twitter, that includes where you are and how long you're going to be there – if you choose to post it.

Officer E.F. Piscitelli works as a crime prevention police officer in the north district of Raleigh and urges people to secure their online presence just as they would their home.

"If your Facebook page or your social media is locked to where only friends see it, they know that you're gone anyway. It's important to make sure you have those securities added to your social media so that no other people can get in to see what you are actually doing," he said.

But, if you still want to keep your online presence public, he offers this advice:

"Then don't put the pictures on there that you're in Barbados for the month."

While, you don't want strangers to know your travel plans, Officer Piscitelli says you do want your neighbors to know so they can keep an eye on your home.
