JORDAN LAKE, N.C. -

Boaters will be hitting area lakes today in celebration of the Memorial Day holiday and while they are having fun, law enforcement officials are on the job making sure folks stay safe.

For them, the Memorial Day weekend means lots of boat inspections.

During one inspection on Sunday, officers found the required fire extinguisher, but it had problems.

"Your fire extinguisher is going to be have to be replaced," an officer told a boat's skipper. "The little yellow safety pin is not on it so there's no way to check it."

Preventing drunk boating is a priority among state law enforcement officers, as is making sure people wear their personal flotation devices.

"It's not going to do you any good in a locked compartment on a boat. We encourage everyone to wear a life jacket," one officer said.
