Competing NC tax overhaul bills discussed

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

House and Senate Republicans are providing more details about their competing plans to overhaul North Carolina's tax system.

Senate GOP leaders rolled out a bill Thursday that largely follows the framework they offered three weeks ago and would greatly expand the number of services subject to the sales tax.

The measure also contains lower sales and income tax rates but now attempts to address criticisms that the changes would require more low- and middle-income families to pay higher taxes.

Earlier Thursday, the House Finance Committee began debating the chamber's Republican plan, which would also lower rates but only expand the sales tax base slightly.

No votes were taken on either plan or on a third proposal in the Senate that more closely aligns with House GOP proposal.
