Officials want Updyke to pay restitution for oak poisoning

WETUMPKA, Ala. -

Court officials are asking for Harvey Updyke, who pleaded guilty to poisoning the Toomer's Corner oak trees, to pay about a million dollars in restitution.

The motion was recently filed by the Lee County District Attorney's Office and is based on the costs Auburn University absorbed trying to save the oaks and the estimated cost of their planned replacements.

Updyke's defense attorney said he will file an appropriate response after researching the facts.
