CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

Shortly after 1 a.m., UNC's Cody Stubbs rapped a hit down the left-field line to send Landon Lassiter home and earn Carolina its 12th NCAA regional title.

But the No. 1-seeded Tar Heel barely avoided an upset early Tuesday morning at Boshamer Stadium after UNC gave up six runs in the ninth inning as Florida Atlantic took an 8-6 lead.

It was a stunning ending to a stunning game, and an outcome that had at least one Carolina fan exalting in the middle of the night.

"My stomach's here," David Russell said, gesturing to his mid-section. Moving his hands to his throat, "Ninth inning: here. Sinks -- just drops to my feet. I don't know how to react."

The Heels tied it up in the bottom, sending the game into extra innings, but fell behind again in the 12th after the Owls hit a three-run homer in the top of the inning.

"We come back -- two runs -- back up. Heart's pounding, heart's pounding the whole time. I don't know how to react," Russell said after the game. "Then they go up by three -- back down to my feet. It's over, it's got to be over. You can't come back from that."

Again the Heels came back, tying the game in the bottom and taking it home 12-11 in the 13th.
"Next thing you know: boom, boom, boom," he said, pounding his chest."Everyone, the whole place erupts -- you can't get any crazier than theBosh."

Monday night's decisive game came after the second-seeded Owls edged the Heels 3-2 on Sunday.

The early morning win was the third time in less than two weeks that Carolina has played into the next day.

Barely a week ago, North Carolina needed 18 innings to beat rival North Carolina State in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. And the night before, it took 14 innings for the Heels to top Clemson.

Carolina will now host South Carolina in the Super Regionals at UNC on Friday and Saturday.
