Free Meals for 18 and Younger at Local Schools

COLUMBUS, GA -

Local parents can now take their children to 22 Muscogee County schools that provide free breakfast and lunch over the summer.

Dalecia Williams brought her kids and their friends to Hannan Elementary School for lunch. she says her girls participated in the program last year, and she's grateful that the schools are having it again.

"If I'm out and about already instead of having to run back home to make lunch why not take advantage of the hot lunches that the community is going to serve for them," says Williams.

The schools provide nutritious, hot meals to children during the summer.

"We make sure the kids have something to eat, nutrition food, because a lot of parents work. They don't have time to fix food. That's why we're here to serve the kids," says Betty Mathis.

The schools are required to follow the same dietary guidelines that they do during the school year. Hannan's nutritionist Karen Davis says it's just as important to have proper meals during the summer as it is during the school year.

"That why we feel like if we provide these meals for these kids during the summer, they'll get at least breakfast and lunch. We know they're getting some proper nutrition," says Davis.

The schools participating in the program all have at least 59% of their students receiving free or reduced lunch during the school year.

Hannan says kids come to the cafeterias by themselves or their parents come with them. Adults can eat breakfast for $1.50 and lunch for $3.00. Williams tells other moms to bring their kids too.

"I would definitely encourage anyone to come out here and bring their kids. It saves on the grocery bill for the summer when the kids are home so definitely take advantage of it so the program can continue."

The free meals will be available as long a there is enough participation at the schools.
