Gus Malzahn, Nick Saban and other top SEC football coaches got to tee it up alongside PGA Tour pros Wednesday afternoon at Shoal Creek for the Regions Traditions Pro-Am.
For Malzahn, it was another first as he adjusts to life in SEC after spending last season at Arkansas State.
"As far as football, it's about the same," Malzahn said. "It's just events like this, and the media. It's a little bit different, but there are a lot of similarities."
For the hyper-competitive coaches, Wednesday's golf break was a welcome respite.
"I play golf for fun," Saban said. "I like to play well, but I got enough competition in my life that I have to get serious about that this is a fun, enjoyable day for me."
For Malzahn, stepping up a level in his coaching career has downshifted his golf game.
"When I coached in high school, I played a lot and I was pretty competitive," he said. "This college football's kind of hurt my golf game, so I'm going to kind of relax and try to enjoy this."
Rain delayed Wednesday's rounds, and eventually canceled the Pro-Am altogether just after 4:30 p.m. ET.
