NEW YORK -

The Atlanta Braves selected Oklahoma State right-handed pitcher Jason Hursh with pick no. 31 in the first round of Major League Baseball's amateur draft Thursday night.

Hursh is 6-foot-1, 197 pounds, and throws in the mid-90s. His fastball has been clocked as high as 98 miles per hour.

His fastball was called by Baseball America "one of the most devastating pitches in the draft" due to its late movement. Hursh finished 2013 6-5 with a 2.79 ERA in 16 starts after missing all of 2012 recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Hursh is the third college pitcher the Braves have taken with their first-round pick in the last five years, joining Mike Minor (Vanderbilt) from 2009 and Sean Gilmartin (Florida State) in 2011.
