An unidentified man is facing charges for traffic violations after police say he hit several vehicles and then held officers in a standoff for hours Friday morning.

The man had been reported missing by family members.

The Fayetteville Police said they were informed at 7:43 a.m. Friday that a man had been missing. They tried to contact him at a traffic stop but he drove away.

At 8:07 a.m., police said, a vehicle matching the description of the missing man was involved in a collision on Highway 301 South near Elk Road. In that accident, the man hit cars, including sideswiping a tanker truck.

Fayetteville Police Chief Harold Medlock said the man then pulled off the road and would not surrender to police as he held a knife to his neck. Medlock said the man was incoherent.

The police department's special response team eventually got close enough to the man's truck to put three pepper spray canister in the cab. The man surrendered moments later, shortly before 11 a.m.

Medlock said the man would not face other charges. Officers were only concerned that the situation end safely he said.
