Friends and family remembered 17-year-old Deonta Whitaker and his brother 24-year-old Anthony Whitaker at a visitation held in Ahoskie Friday.

Both brothers died in a car accident while on their way to Deonta's graduation.

Classmates of Deonta attended the visitation wearing special t-shirts made in memory of the brothers.

The funeral will be held at the Bertie County High School at 11am on Saturday.

High school graduation is usually a time to celebrate; but on Saturday, that day of celebration, turned into a tragedy for one Bertie County family.

Sandra Williams-McGlone was waiting to watch her son, Deonta Whitaker, walk across the stage at Bertie High School's Graduation. Instead, she and her family were pulled out of the ceremony for some devastating news. Her only two sons, 17-year-old  Deonta and 24-year-old Anthony had been a fatal car accident on their way to ceremony.

"I just can't describe it. It's unbelievable. It's like it's a dream that I want to wake up from," said Williams-McGlone.

"This is such a difficult time, for us. It was just devastating yesterday. Our minds were all over the place," said Deonta's godmother and aunt, Tamare Cherry.

Highway Patrol says they were called to a car accident after 11 a.m. Troopers say Anthony was driving Deonta to graduation when he lost control of the car and crashed into some trees on Republican Road.

"Did they survive this to know what happened and then they died, or do they not know what happen?" said Williams-McGlone.

On Sunday family members gathered at their home in Lewiston to comfort each other.

"It's going to get worse before it gets better at this point, but we know that we're made to endure, and we will," said Cherry.

The brother's family says they have already received an overwhelming amount of support from the community. Williams-McGlone says Deonta's best friend actually accepted his diploma on her son's behalf.

Williams-McGlone says Deonta was headed to Elizabeth City State University later this month as a model scholar. On Sunday, the Bertie County High School Alumni Association honored one of Deonta's many scholarships by donating the money to the family to help with funeral arrangements.

Williams-McGlone says Anthony leaves behind a three-year-old daughter.

The brothers will be laid to rest this week at Hunters Funeral Home in Ahoskie, N. C.
