Most wanted: Canteen truck thief steals thousands of dollars

BLOUNTVILLE, TN (WJHL) -

Tri-Cities law enforcement say a man has figured out a way to steal thousands of dollars off mobile food and beverage trucks.

The thefts happened in broad daylight while the driver stepped away from his vehicle.

The target - Canteen delivery trucks.

From business headquarters in Blountville, the Canteen trucks take loads of food and drinks to businesses and then return to headquarters with cash.

That fact, investigators say, their suspect knows all too well.

"On April 23rd, we received a call that a Canteen vending truck had been broken into in the Industrial Park in Piney Flats," said Leslie Earhart, Sullivan County Sheriff's Office spokesperson.

About 9 a.m., Earhart said the driver of the truck went into Bell Helicopter.   While the driver was inside, Earhart says the suspect also walked into the lobby of Bell Helicopter and asked an employee a question.

"We believe he did that to try to get an idea where the Canteen vending employee was at at that particular time," said Earhart.

Moments later, the suspect cut the lock off the Canteen truck and took cash from a safe.

A lot of cash.

"He stole in excess of a thousand dollars each time," Earhart said.

That's right - the same man is a suspect in several Canteen truck burglaries in the Tri-Cities.

"We do believe he has knowledge of the vehicle and possibly the route," Earhart said.
