DURHAM, N.C. -

The organizers of the Durham Blues Festival announced Wednesday that they will take this year to reorganize the annual event for a larger celebration in 2014.

St. Joseph's Historic Foundation announced the Bull Durham Blues Festival will not be held in its traditional format this year. Instead, the organization plans to celebrate the blues on a smaller scale, with a heavier emphasis on introducing local talent to the Durham community.

The staff and Board of Directors of the Hayti Heritage Center made the decision to take this year to reorganize and rebuild the popular event.

"We are exploring opportunities with the American Tobacco Campus, Capitol Broadcasting and others as part of our planning for a ‘new and improved' large venue Bull Durham Blues Festival in 2014," said Angela Lee, Hayti's executive director.

"For the balance of this year, we will continue the celebration of blues and other forms of music via our Heritage Music Series events at the Hayti Heritage Center."

Lee said a smaller Durham Blues Festival will be hosted at the Hayti Heritage Center later this year. The lineup and festival dates will be announced once details are finalized.

"We have every intention of returning to our large outdoor venue in 2014 with local, regional, and national artists on stage," Lee said.

The festival, which has been the St. Joseph's Historic Foundation's signature event for 25 years, occurs in September each year and features some of the finest blues, jazz, and R&B artists in the country.

It is nationally recognized as one of the premier blues festivals in the country and has become one of North Carolina's largest celebrations of the blues.

Hayti launched its Heritage Music Series this year and will continue the series with acclaimed jazz, blues and other artists.
