New rapid opening at White Water

COLUMBUS, GA -

Organizers say they have had larger than expected crowds taking advantage of the Whitewater experience.

Whitewater Express says Chattahoochee Whitewater is the most exciting thing that has happened to the industry since the 1996 Olympics, they said the first two weeks have been great for Columbus and Phenix City.

Rafters from around the south have had a few weeks to go down the Chattahoochee River and they have gotten plenty of people in the water.

"It has been great," said Lucas Brown with White Water. "We have we have had over 2000 people rafting. I think everybody is having a great time. Over 2,000 I know. I think we have reached eight states. That is a lot of people."

The only setback was the closure of the Cutbait rapid. It has been reopened and guides are getting extra training.

"It's really big," said Dan Gilbert, Whitewater Express President. "It's probably the biggest rapid in the East. Because of that, we are checking out guides on Cutbait in addition to their normal routine of learning the river."

And even if you have been down the rapids already, there will be something new for you very soon.

"They are all open except one," Gilbert said. "There is one rapid upstream, once the put in is finished, that will be about another month, when that is finished, we will have a new rapid called ambush that nobody has seen yet."

The Whitewater folks say they have seen how much the people in the area like getting in the rafts. They are expecting Father's Day weekend to bring in yet another big crowd.

"It's going to be a really big weekend," said Brown. "I think Monday and Sunday are both really full. Saturday as well. If you want to come, you should definitely give us a call and make reservations."

And their goal is to make Whitewater a destination to adventure seekers around the world for years to come.

Whitewater Express says they have not had any injuries in the first few weeks and they hope it stays that way for a few years.

Organizers have seen people from as far away as Texas come to Columbus to check out our Whitewater. They say the crowds increased the second weekend.
