HOPE MILLS, N.C. -

During their meeting Monday night, Hope Mills Commissioners voted to ban Commissioner Tonzie Collins from non-public areas of town buildings.

Mayor Jackie Warner said Tuesday morning the vote came in reaction to another complaint about Collins filed by a town employee since the last Commissioners meeting.

Warner said several employees have filed complaints against Collins since he took office in 2005. Warner said banning Collins from areas of town buildings is a way to show support to employees. She said the action was not a result of a personal disagreement with Collins, but she felt she needed to be willing to take the forefront in preventing more complaints by employees.

Collins questioned the legality of the measure. He said he wasn't sure if elected officials could effectively ban another elected official from city property. He deferred any further comment to his attorney.

Mayor Pro-Tem Mike Mitchell said he agreed some action needed to be taken in light of more complaints.

Commissioner Pat Edwards said the complaints involving Collins have been a sore spot for Hope Mills, and commissioners needed to put a stop to it. She said she believes the Board of Commissioners has now done all they can. She said voters will have to decide if they want Collins to continue being a Commissioner for Hope Mills.
