Report names ETSU among worst teaching programs in nation

JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) -

East Tennessee State University has been named one of the worst teacher training programs in the nation according to the National Council for Teacher Quality.

But, the Dean of the College of Education at ETSU says the study is flawed.

Doctor Hal Knight released a statement saying, "The NCTQ research included no evaluations of performance by ETSU graduates in the classroom or any inclusion of pass rates by students on state licensure examinations."

Knight says there were no surveys made on student teachers enrolled at ETSU and the methods NCTQ used to conduct their study aren't appropriate for the teaching profession.

"They didn't talk to students, they didn't talk to employers, they didn't talk to anyone else. All they did was review our syllabi, review our catalog copy, review our handbooks," said Dr. Hal Knight.

U.S. News and World Report along with the National Council on Teacher Quality conducted the study.
