RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina first lady Ann McCrory is making a rare foray into politics by urging the state Senate to take action on a bill aimed at preventing animal cruelty by large dog breeders.

McCrory said Tuesday that the Senate should follow the House's lead in setting minimum care standards for people who keep at least 10 female dogs primarily to breed and sell offspring as pets.

The bill excluded hunting and show breeders to help assuage concerns in the agriculture industry. Some lawmakers fear the bill is another step in regulating hunting and farm animals or extending rights to animals.

Sen. Andrew Brock of Mocksville says those concerns and the limited time remaining in this year's regular session cast doubt upon the bill's prospects in his Senate committee.
