Former player clears air with new Auburn coach Golloway

AUBURN, Ala. -

Sunny Golloway has not been Auburn's head coach for a week, and he's already been the target of, and a peacemaker in, attacks on his character from former players.

After one former Oklahoma player tweeted critical things of Golloway, Jordan John, a pitcher for the Sooners in 2011 and 2012, piled on, saying Golloway had once called him "worthless."

John has since backed off those comments, and told The Oklahoman he and Golloway have a "great relationship."

Golloway will also have to work on some relationships on the recruiting trail, after spending the last 23 years in the state of Oklahoma.

"The question about recruiting, it's not going to be a problem," Golloway said at his introductory news conference. "We're going to hit the ground with our feet running and we're going to go out and win those battles. I love that part of the job."

The new coach already boasts a familiarity with the Atlanta area, including the prestigious East Cobb league. Known for a tough style and small-ball approach, Golloway will push his team in the offseason, then kick back and relax.

"I love the competition," he said. "You win your NCAA bid, you win your championships in the summer and in the fall. In the springtime, you have the pleasure of watching [the team] play."
