Most Wanted: Carter County car burglary spree

Updated:
ELIZABETHTON, TN (WJHL) -

Investigators in Carter County are trying to find the people behind a rash of car burglaries.

The thieves took items from 23 cars in the month of April.

The most recent report was filed June 16th.

"They're not wanting to spend a whole lot of time in the cars," said Lt. Mike Little.  "They typically reach in, spend about 3 or 4 seconds grabbing what they can get their hands on very easily, and take off."

And they're not having to work hard to get the items.  Cars targeted usually have unlocked doors, Little said.

The targeted areas: western parts of Carter County including Greenley and Dave Buck Roads and the Biltmore Community including Captain and Spears Avenues.

Items stolen include wallets, cell phones, money, GPS devices, jewelry, and even four guns.

One victim caught the robbery on surveillance video.  Investigators hope that will lead to tips about the suspects.

"The best way to protect yourself is to make sure your car is locked," Little said.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, "Scammers use cameras, keypad overlays, and skimming devices - like a realistic-looking card reader placed over the factory-installed card reader on an ATM or gas pump - to capture the information from your card's magnetic strip without your knowledge and get your PIN."
