CSU's Waugh to play overseas for Great Britain

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Former Columbus State University softball player Kori Waugh will compete in the European Championships and World Championship Qualifier as a member of the Great Britain Women's Fastpitch Team.

The competition will be played from July 7-13 in Prague, Czech Republic with 19 countries participating. The top four finishers will earn a spot in the World Championships next August in the Netherlands.

"I feel very blessed to have a dual citizenship of the United States and England which has given me this great opportunity to represent one of my countries,' said Waugh. "I am looking forward to representing England in the European Championships, and hopefully for years to come including the Olympics if they get readmitted to the Games."

"Kori had an outstanding career for us at Columbus State," comment head softball coach Brad Huskisson. "She capped off her career with one of the best single-seasons in program history and has earned the right to compete for her country. There haven't been many who have gone on to play softball professionally or internationally after their time at CSU. It's a testament to her hard work and determination."

Waugh is one of 17 members of the Great Britain team which finished second and third in their last two appearances in the European Championships. Waugh will have a familiar face with her as her younger sister Keeli is also a part of the team, as well as the U19 team.

Kori will depart for London tomorrow to participate in Great Britain's training camp which will run through July 4. The team will then head to Prague for the Championships.

Waugh finished her stellar four-year career for the Lady Cougars this past spring in which she earned first team All-Southeast Region honors. She sparked the CSU offense registering the third most walks (48) and the ninth most homeruns (19) in the country. The outfielder finished the season with a .318 batting average and a .500 on-base percentage while crossing the plate 48 times.
