A Columbus girl with cancer's wish for a playhouse came true thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Five-year-old Kelcey Borom is living with adrenal cancer, but for a few moments she was able to forget about her problems and celebrate her brand new pink playhouse Tuesday.
"Happy Wish Day!" screamed Kelcey's friends and family as she walked into her backyard to see her playhouse for the first time. For months Make-A-Wish has been working with Kelcey to give her one wish. There were a couple things she wanted but most of all she just wished for a place where she could get away from all her problems.
She says, "I wanted a puppet area, a loft, and a reading area because I really really like to read."
"Kelsey's going to have this playhouse for the rest of her life," says Make-A-Wish Georgia marketing coordinator Aza Walker, "and get to come out and escape from the hospital, and escape from the medical issues that she suffers from, and just be able to be in her own personalized pink Hello Kitty playhouse, so we are super excited."
Make-A-Wish has partnered with Wells Enterprises, maker of Blue Bunny ice cream, to grant 100 wishes in 100 years. Kelcey is one of the first recipients of their sponsorship and Mike Conrade says it's amazing to be able to help kids who are sick.
"We step back and look at ourselves in the mirror, and see how lucky we really are to have healthy children and healthy grandchildren," says Conrade. "It's just a special place in our heart that we can be able to do something like this."
The volunteers, sponsors, friends and family all helped Kelcey take in her new playhouse with all her favorite things. The first thing on her to-do list? Hit the book nook.
"I love it," she says.
Make-A-Wish grants wishes to kids ages two and a half to 18 who have life-threatening illnesses. If you'd like to know how to help other kids in Georgia, visit www.georgia.wish.org.
