Valley Rescue Mission Breaks Ground for New Center

Posted: Updated:

Valley Rescue Mission will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday, June 30, at 2 p.m. for its third Donation and Retail Center.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony will break with tradition, as clients representing a cross-section of the Mission's outreach to the homeless and individuals with addiction issues will be the ones to ceremonially wield shovels and dig up the first scoops of dirt. The Mission plans to have over thirty men, women, and children from its shelters and substance abuse recovery programs present, as well as employees and members of the board of directors, to be an integral part of the ceremony.

"As we thought about the ceremony, we thought through the fact that this building symbolizes an increase in funds and goods that will benefit our clients directly," states Donna Pearce, director of development. "The financial proceeds from our retail division contribute a significant portion of our budget, and many of the items donated to our Bargain Centers are distributed to clients on a voucher basis. We determined that we wanted representatives from the entire Valley Rescue Mission family to symbolically show their involvement in the new project, be that as a staff member, a board member, or a direct recipient of the benefits that will come from this new project."

Founded in 1963, Valley Rescue Mission offers emergency shelter for homeless men, women and children, addiction recovery programs, and a wide-spread community outreach to low-income residents of the Chattahoochee Valley region, including food baskets, clothing vouchers, free daily community meals, assistance with provision of Christmas toys, and free residential camp for children at Camp JOY.

The location of this new building is 7553 N. Veterans Parkway, adjacent to Front Porch of the South. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held on Monday, July 1, at 7 p.m.
