The 65th Annual Virginia Highlands Festival
continues its tradition of Juried Fine Art and Photography competitions to
showcase local artists and inspire creativity in the community. These
competitions will be presented in partnership with two local arts institutions:
The Arts Depot (Juried Fine Art) and the William King Museum (Photography).
The photography competition will display entries at the William King Museum in the second floor gallery during the Festival. Cash prizes will be awarded. Categories include youth, amateur and professional. Entrants may deliver their pieces to William King Museum on Saturday, July 20 from 1-5 p.m. or can mail them to the Virginia Highlands Festival Photography Competition, PO Box 801, Abingdon, VA 24212. Advance registration is required by July 22.
"We're very pleased and grateful for the opportunity to return to the William King Museum," said Board President and Photography Chairman Julie Donovan. "What better setting for a photography exhibition?"
Entries in the fine arts competition will be juried into The Arts Depot gallery and will be available for viewing during the Festival. Artists can deliver up to three paintings to The Arts Depot on Saturday, July 27 or Sunday, July 28 from 2-5 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded and many of the art pieces will be available for purchase. The Awards Presentation Ceremony conducted by the show's juror, Ed Chitwood, will take place on Thursday, August 1 at 7:30 p.m. at The Arts Depot.
"The Virginia Highlands Festival is a celebration of the arts, and we're proud to have a premier regional art exhibit featuring a diverse offering of the area's best artists," said Fine Art Chairman Linda Hamilton.
The Festival continues to inspire young artists with the annual Youth Art exhibit. Artists from kindergarten through twelfth grade may drop off their entries on Saturday, July 27 or Sunday, July 28 from 2-4 p.m. at the William King Museum.
In addition to the competitions and exhibits, the Festival will present workshops and lectures to inform and inspire. Fine art juror Ed Chitwood will give a gallery talk at the Arts Depot on Sunday August 4 from 2-4 p.m. and will be discussing the Juried Fine Art entries. A photography presentation led by Jeffrey Stoner called "The Fine Art of Photography" will be held on Saturday, August 10 from 1-3 p.m. and will examine the progression of photography since the 1800s.
