Report: Johnson City registered nurse came to work intoxicated

News Channel 11 has learned a registered nurse's license was revoked after co-workers and her supervisor said she came to work intoxicated. 

A document from the Tennessee Board of Nursing says Alison Harrison violated its code and rules while working as a RN for Mountain States Health Alliance at Johnson City Medical Center. At the time, Harrison worked in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The consent order says Harrison came to work on August 28 - a day she was not scheduled to work. Co-workers said she appeared to be confused and did not know what day it was. Since she was not scheduled to work, she was asked to leave.

She reported to work the next day. Again, co-workers said she appeared to be confused as to her whereabouts and did not know what day or time it was. Her supervisor was concerned that Harrison may have been intoxicated and told her to report to work the following day.

When Harrison allegedly reported to work on August 30, co-workers said they observed her having trouble remembering the combination to enter her personal locker.  Peers also said she appeared impaired unsteady on her feet, had slurred speech and had the smell of alcohol on her person.

Her supervisor asked her to take a urine drug test. At first, the report states, she refused but was later convinced to take the test by a co-worker. That test did not reveal any substances in her system, but a blood alcohol test yielded positive results. According to the consent order, Harrison's blood alcohol concentration was .325. 

She was suspended pending an internal investigation. Harrison voluntarily entered a rehabilitation facility for treatment, but was fired on October 6 for violations of JCMC's drug policy.

Her nursing license was revoked by the Tennessee Board of Nursing for unprofessional conduct and for being under the influence of alcoholic beverages while on duty in a health care facility.

Since then, Harrison has agreed to take part in a monitoring agreement with the Tennessee Professional Assistance Program (TNPAP). She's also to remain on professional probation for at least three years.

Harrison has worked at Johnson City Medical Center since August 2000.
