JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) -

Relay for Life kicked off Saturday afternoon at Indian Ridge Middle School in Johnson City. The hope of walks like this is to raise both funds, and awareness for the American Cancer Society.. Communities across the country come together to celebrate cancer survivors and to honor those who've been lost to the terrible disease.

Typically, the walks are 24 hours. But there's a bit of a different spin this year.

"Traditionally we've been an overnight event, but we decided this year Johnson City is doing something from noon until midnight. That way we can get more of a family focus, try to get more of the community to come out and join us," event coordinator Jessica Poff said.

News Channel 11's own, Nate Morabito, was also out at the event to emcee the nighttime festivities.
