Flood Watch continues for parts of Eastern North Carolina

Posted: Updated:

The National Weather Service continues a Flood Watch across parts of Eastern North Carolina. This means that conditions will continue to be favorable for flooding as periods of heavy rain remain in the forecast through midweek.

Over the past month, portions of Eastern North Carolina have seen 10 - 15 inches of rain, 4 - 8" inches of that have fallen just in the past week. That puts us around 200 percent above the normal amount of precipitation for this month.

Currently, we have a Flood Warning for Contentnea Creek in Greene County until further notice. The creek is already moving into minor flood stage and looks to crest later this week. Other area streams, creeks and rivers are also experiencing higher than normal water flows. A Flood Warning is now in effect for the NE Cape Fear River in Duplin County until further notice.  We could have additional flood warnings coming out for the Tar River and the Neuse River. Stay with Storm Team 9 for further updates.

Some tips if you encounter flooding in your area:

If you live in a flood prone area, be prepared just in case you need to evacuate. Have a plan of action.

If you are driving and encounter a flooded road, don't drive through it. You don't know if the road has been washed out or how deep the water is. Six inches of water can cause stalling and loss of control in most passenger cars. One foot of water can make a car float.
