LaGrange Man Points Gun at Police After Crash

LaGRANGE, Ga. -

A LaGrange man has been arrested for aggravated assault on a police officer after crashing his car and pointing a gun at a police officer, LaGrange police announced Monday.

On June 22, Billy McCants crashed his car on Harwell Avenue after fleeing a traffic stop, police say. McCants emerged from his Honda Civic pointing a semi-automatic handgun at the officer. The officer took cover and McCants fled on foot but was arrested a short time later.

McCants has been charged with Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer; Obstructing or Hindering a Law Enforcement Officer, a felony; Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of Certain Crimes; Driving Under the Influence; Reckless Driving; Driving While License Suspended; Striking a Fixed Object; and a multitude of other traffic related offenses. He is currently at the Troup County Jail.
