Lee County Sheriff: Phenix City Roofer Took Money, Performed No Work

Posted: Updated:

The owner of a roofing company in Phenix City has been arrested for stealing his customer's money without providing them a service.

Over the past few weeks, a few Lee County residents asked the sheriff's office to try to find a roofer who took their money without providing a service.

"The issue was that he was taking payments up front to purchase supplies. And then he was supposed to do the work he agreed to do with the homeowners," said Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones.

Many Lee County homes needed repair after spring and summer thunderstorms damaged roofs.

So, customers wrote a check with the assumption that the money was going to be used for a deposit to have roof work done. That work never happened.

On Thursday, investigators arrested Magee, 27, of Phenix city, AL, on two warrants for Theft of Property First Degree in reference to these complaints. The arrest was announced Monday evening.

"We have, in this particular case, charged the individual with two counts, at least at this point, two counts of theft of property in the first degree," Sheriff Jones said.

Sheriff Jones says consumers should exercise particular care in the spring and summer months. He says you must know who you are dealing with.

"If someone offers to do work for you, check them out," said Sheriff Jones. "Find out their background. Check with references. See who they have done work with before. Check with you local chamber of commerce."

And Sheriff Jones says you should be wary of large fees up front and having to rush your decisions on a purchase. He says the victims in this case lost a large amount.

"We are into the thousands of dollars on each of these individuals that was victimized," said Sheriff Jones.

He says it is always a good idea to have a signed contract and cost estimate before having any work done on your home.

Randy Magee Jr. has posted bond. The case is still under investigation. Sheriff Jones says he could also face charges in Russell County.
