RALEIGH, N.C. -

Orange County declared a state of emergency late Tuesday afternoon after severe flooding in the county after heavy rains on Sunday.

The county was deluged with 5.13 inches of rain Sunday and the rains continued Tuesday across central North Carolina. On Tuesday, the county even reported that some wastewater overflow was reported Sunday night on the east side of Chapel Hill.

Meanwhile, water rose and residents groaned on Tuesday as more rains swept across central North Carolina.

Damage assessment teams continued their efforts Tuesday in Village Green Condominiums, Brookwood Condominiums, Colonial Arms Apartments and Airport Gardens. None of these locations were condemned.

Town Parks and Recreation is reporting cleanup is continuing on area greenways and residents should avoid these areas until they can be restored.

The Community Center Playground on Estes Drive has been reopened for use. The Umstead Park Playground along with the Sykes Street Playground will remain closed until further notice.

Orange County has activated the Emergency Operations Center, worked with the American Red Cross to set up Smith Middle School as a shelter, reached out to volunteer organizations to help displaced people and looked for housing solutions for residents impacted by the storm.

The county is also working to help residents find shelter for their pets.

In addition, the county is looking to assess the damage. Residents who are displaced can get clothes and household items for free at the PTA Thrift Shop at 89 S. Elliott Road and at the Orange Congregations in Mission at 300 Millstone Drive in Hillsborough.
