A new way to tell which kidney transplant recipients will have problems

The National Institutes of Health funded research that has identified a new, non-invasive way to diagnose and predict which patients will reject their kidney transplants. Typically, doctors perform a kidney biopsy to see if the body is rejecting the new organ but usually only after signs of distress. Doctors say the new urine-based test is more accurate and could allow doctors to intervene earlier. About 10 to 15 percent of kidney recipients experience rejection within a year of the transplant.
