SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN (WJHL) -

A Sullivan County resident has been injured in Afghanistan where he has been working to train Afghan police officers.

Ricky Watterson, 50, suffered a severe concussion, cuts, and bruises Monday when militant suicide bombers attacked a NATO compound, his family told News Channel 11's David McAvoy.

Despite his injuries, family members told us he's expected to make a full recovery.   One of his friends was killed in the attack, said Watterson's wife Valentina.

Watterson works for a company called DynCorp International.  According to the company's website, the company provides global "support of U.S. national security and foreign policy objectives."

He's worked for the company in Kabul since 2009.

Watterson, a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School, once worked for the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office and the Bluff City Police Department.

He was scheduled to come back to the United States in the fall.
