The SUV University of North Carolina basketball player P.J. Hairston was driving when arrested June 5 had been rented by a Durham man with multiple convictions, according to police reports.

WNCN obtained a copy of the rental agreement, which confirms the Yukon was rented by Haydn Thomas. Thomas told USA Today earlier this week he had rented the car but was not connected to Hairston and was not a UNC booster.

The SUV was rented from Hertz from June 2-5 and cost $1,261.64.

North Carolina Department of Public Safety records show Thomas had been convicted four times.

Thomas faced felony and various misdemeanor charges, including drug charges in 2002 and 2005 and carrying a concealed weapon in 2002.

Thomas, 39, told USA Today he rented the vehicle for himself and that Miykael Faulcon, a friend, borrowed it. Thomas told USA Today he did not know Hairston but knew Faulcon from "partying at clubs."

Hairston, a 6-foot-5 guard from Greensboro, led the Tar Heels in scoring last season, at 14.6 points per game as a sophomore.

Hairston started Carolina's final 13 games and was a key to the Tar Heels' late-season turnaround.
