Birmingham soldier dies in Afghanistan

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -

An 18-year-old soldier from Birmingham has died in Afghanistan after his unit was attacked with a rocket propelled grenade. The Department of Defense said Private First Class Errol "Elijah" Duran Aster Milliard, died Thursday.

He graduated from Carver High School in Birmingham in 2012 and was on his first deployment.

He is survived by his grandmother. Family is on their way to identify his remains.

Millard was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Good Conduct Medal.

Before becoming a White Sands Missile Range he was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri graduating with 18 of his peers who arrived at WSMR with him and deployed
