COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Seventeen-year-old Cody Mathis, suspected of murder, turned himself in to Columbus Police at 4:45 PM Sunday afternoon. Mathis' lawyer, Stacey Jackson, confirmed the information to News 3.

Mathis is wanted in connection with killing 57-year-old David Rutherford late last month. Rutherford's body was found behind Ward Chapel AME Church in the East Highland area. Police believe the incident started at Rutherford's house on 28th Street.

Jackson said his client is not guilty and had "absolutely nothing" to do with the murder. He believes rumor and speculation led to his client being named as a suspect in the case. Jackson said authorities searched Mathis' house, but no weapon was recovered.

Jackson did not elaborate on where his client has been since the incident.

A preliminary court hearing will be held this week.
