COLUMBUS, Ga. -

A website that promotes the use of technology to improve accessibility to education has named two Columbus State University faculty among its top professors teaching online in Georgia.

Amanda B. Hawkins, an associate professor of nursing and coordinator of CSU's RN-to-BSN Program, was named among the Top 20 Medical and Health Professors in Georgia, while Jan G. Burcham, CSU's Moselle Worsley Fletcher Distinguished Chair in Teacher Education, was among the Top 20 Education Professors in Georgia. Both lists were compiled by the website Online Schools Georgia.

The RN-to-BSN Program led by Hawkins allows registered nurses lacking a bachelor's degree to return to school for a year and complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, taking all their classes online, on their schedule. Hawkins, who joined Columbus State in 1994, was nominated as CSU's Educator of the Year in 2001. An expert in medical-surgical nursing, she holds degrees from Troy, George Mason University and Columbus State.

Burcham, a professor of early childhood education, is coordinating CSU's new online Master of Education in teacher leadership, designed for designed for certified educators who want to keep teaching while also extending their influence outside the walls of the classroom as they work with teachers to improve teaching and learning in their schools and systems. Burcham, who joined Columbus State in 2004, is also editor of Perspectives in Learninga refereed journal produced by CSU's College of Education and Health Professions. She holds degrees from Auburn University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Online Schools Georgia named the top college professors for 2013 in four categories, working with StateStats, a nonprofit partner that promotes open access to online learning tools. The two sites stated they were trying to find post-secondary educators who had been recognized recently for excellence in the classroom, on campus and in the community.

"Our goal with the top professors project is to recognize some of Georgia's standout educators and mentors," said Wes Ricketts, vice president and general manager of StateStats. "When our site visitors expressed deep interest in learning about the people who make the state's colleges and universities truly tick, we were honored to oblige."
