McCrory: I'll veto Senate bill on abortion restriction, sign House bill

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Governor Pat McCrory released a statement Friday concerning the House and Senate bill's dealing with abortion restrictions in North Carolina.

McCrory said he would veto the Senate-approved bill, House bill 695. But if the governor gets the House passed bill, Senate bill 353, he would sign it.

"The recent House version allows the medical professionals at the Department of Health and Human Services to write the rules which will ensure women's safety," McCrory said in the statement. "I want to thank those who worked on an improved bill which will better protect women while not further limiting access."

The House voted 74-41 Thursday to approve new rules after a highly-charged, three-hour debate watched from the gallery by advocates on both sides of the issue.

House leaders adjusted the Senate's language with input from McCrory's top health agency administrator. The standards have not been changed since 1994, officials have said. The governor hasn't spoken publicly about the updated measure, which now must return to the GOP-led Senate next week. It would have to get approved there before it goes to McCrory's desk.

Senate Bill 353 was originally legislation meant to address motorcycle safety, but the bill was amended with the new changes to the original House Bill 695 that Gov. McCrory threatened to veto.

Abortion rights groups accused McCrory of going back on a campaign promise.
