The annual Jehovah Witness' District Convention is in town for the weekend bringing 5,000 people to the Columbus area. The Day's Inn says their hotel is two times fuller than on a normal weekend and they are not the only ones benefiting from the "God's Word is Truth" convention.
Ron Evans says convention members are spending time learning more about God's word and each other.
"It's a wonderful time for us to get together because a lot of times we just live busy lives. We don't get to see each other," says Evans.
The convention has pumped almost 3 million dollars into Columbus in the past and it is expected to bring in millions this year too.
"People are out and about checking out the shops and stores of Downtown Columbus. They are stopping in and having a bite to eat at Momma G's. It is good for us," says Leslie Solarzano General Manager at Momma Goldberg's. She says lunch alone on Saturday her sales have increased from this same time last year.
Ron Evans says the Witnesses are trying to help local businesses.
"We're going to stay in your hotels. We're going to eat in your restaurants. We're going to shop in your stores. We're here. We're not here to be a burden. We're here to make it better and we hope we do that.
Solarzano says she likes all the new faces this weekend.
"It's exciting to have all the new people coming in and checking out what Columbus has to offer downtown. The rafting, little shops and stores that we have, it's good," she says.
Evens hopes this is not the last year the "God's Word is Truth" convention will be in Columbus.
"I hope we keep coming back here. My family likes it. I know I speak for a lot of my friends when I say they like coming here and it's something we look forward to," says Evans.
The convention ends Sunday at 4:00pm.
