AUBURN, Ala. -

Auburn rising sophomore guard Shaq Johnson has been dismissed from the men's basketball team following an arrest late Wednesday night.

Johnson was charged with second-degree possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor, and booked into the Lee County jail at 1:47 a.m. CT Thursday morning. He was released just six minutes later on $500 bond.

The charge means Johnson was not determined to have intent to sell, and carries a maximum jail sentence of one year and a maximum fine of $6,000.

"We hold our student-athletes to a high standard at Auburn University in the way that they conduct themselves off the court," head coach Tony Barbee said in a statement. "I am very disappointed in Shaq's choices and actions, and they won't be tolerated. This decision is not one that I take lightly, but it is in the best interest of both the program and the student-athlete."

Johnson played in all 32 games in the 2012-13 season, starting 21. He averaged 6.2 points per game in Southeastern Conference play.
