ATM broken into, hole cut in convenience store wall

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

The Pitt County Sheriff's Office is investigating an overnight convenience store break-in.

It happened at the Country Fare Store on Barrus Construction Road. Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Christy Wallace tells 9 On Your Side the robbers busted a hole in the wall and broke into the ATM, taking $50 in the process.

This is the latest in what appears to be a crime trend in the east. There have been more than a dozen robberies in Pitt, Martin and Edgecombe Counties since last fall. In each case the robber cut a hole in the wall to get inside.

9 On Your Side talked with the store owner, who says she isn't afraid or even angry.

"I feel sorry for people like that because one day they will stand before God. And he will ask them about what they did and they will be accountable," said Naomi Buck, store owner. "And I pray for people like that because they need prayers. They really do."

Deputies said they're looking into whether this and similar break-ins are connected.

If you're a business owner and you're worried about being a target, the Pitt County Sheriff's Office will do a free security check.
