Opelika rolling in Select 7 on 7

HOOVER, Ala. -

The Opelika Bulldogs finished pool play 5-1-1 in the National Select 7 on 7 Tournament in Hoover, Ala.

The strong showing got them the sixth overall seed out of 32 teams going into tournament play on Friday.

Alabama commit Stephen Roberts did not get to show off, as quarterbacks avoided throwing at the defensive back. But in a break between games, he explained his decision to roll with the Tide.

"I was watching the draft, and 13 (players) went in the draft," he said. "Dee Milliner went in the first round, so that kind of made me want to commit to them. I liked the school. It's a great school and education is great too."

One name that was not called at all Thursday was Jakell Mitchell. The senior tight end and Auburn commit tore his ACL during offseason workouts.

"It was very frustrating," he said of his injury. "I don't think anybody wants to not be able to play their senior year, but it happens. I just have to live with it and just try to work harder to get back."

Opelika will take on Olive Branch, Miss. in the first round of the tournament on Friday. They beat Olive Branch, 25-24, in pool play.
