Spencer excited for potential of 2013

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

For the Spencer Greenwave, 2013 is the year.

Optimism and confidence abounded on Thursday, the first day of high school football practices for most Georgia schools.

Spencer is trying to claw its way out of the basement of region 5-AA, and the team feels like this is the year.

"I feel like we have a good chance of going to the playoffs," said senior quarterback Tarvaraska Davis. "We're working hard, so I think we have a good chance."

Second-year coach Calvin Arnold says he's been telling his team, just make it to the playoffs. Just make it to the playoffs, he says, and anything can happen.

"I think our chances are pretty good this year," he said. "I think, for the most part, we have a stronger team coming back. We have most of our guys coming back, we have a lot of skill guys coming back, and I played a lot of young guys last year knowing that I was looking forward for the future instead of right now."

Even though the first game is still more than a month away, Arnold says the anticipation for the season is palpable.

"I'm very excited," he said. "The kids are excited, the principal is excited. The school's starting to get excited, so with them getting excited, I expect good results."

Spencer opens the season at Memorial Stadium on Aug. 30 against Carver in the 51st annual Heritage Bowl.
