Posted: Updated:

Auburn police allege an Opelika man hired a hitman to kill an ex-family member, the police department announced Thursday evening.

Keith R. Stephens, 55, is accused of contacting an acquaintance and enlisting that person's help in finding a hitman to kill a former family member. That family member, whose exact relationship was not disclosed, lives in Opelika.

Auburn police conducted an investigation and took Stephens into custody for Criminal Solicitation to Commit Murder. He was transported to the Lee County Detention Center, where he is currently being held on $75,000 bond.
