This week's News 3 Neighbor segment features the darling of Fort Mitchell, Ala., Mrs. Carolyn Howard.
Mrs. Carolyn turned 104 Sunday, July 28. Last Saturday the community celebrated her special day with not one birthday cake but two! Around 100 family members and friends gathered at the Fort Mitchell community center to remind Mrs. Carolyn just how special she is.
Martha Nance, one of her relatives, describes Mrs. Carolyn this way. "To me she is the Proverbs 31 woman. She cooks, makes jellies, pickles, she sews, crochets."
Ty Fodor is Mrs. Carolyn's handyman. He brought her a batch of fresh vegetables. He says, "She's fixing to can the bell peppers. She makes a real good squash and bell pepper chutney. This woman is 104 and still canning stuff fresh out of the garden."
After dozens of hugs, handshakes and kisses, Mrs. Carolyn responded, "God has blessed me so and I'm so grateful. I don't understand why I've lived so long, but I'm so grateful and I feel like there's something He wants me to do and I'm still trying to do it."
Her hands have certainly not been idle since passing the century mark. Whether it's selling her cookbook or making cookies, she is always trying to raise funds for her church and other community projects.
Fodor says, "Today we fed the homeless and Mrs. Carolyn is always donating things for the homeless people, needy people, people needing clothes."
Mrs. Carolyn shares her heart with her community, so it's no wonder so many turned out to help her celebrate. Her response? "My heart just overflows. I know I had friends, but you don't realize how many you really do have until something like this."
