DURHAM, N.C. -

Durham County Manager Mike Ruffin announced Monday his plans to retire effective Jan. 31, 2014.

Ruffin made the announcement during the County Commissioners' regular session.

Ruffin reflected on numerous successes during his tenure in the areas of economic development, fiscal management and capital investments, but concluded by crediting employees and staff.

"I have a great staff, the best department head leadership that we have ever had in my 13 years, and a wonderful group of employees who really care about what they do," Ruffin said. "They have been my employee family and I have enjoyed being their manager."

Ruffin has worked with the Durham County Government for 14 years. Prior to coming to Durham County, he held similar posts in the Atlanta and Charlotte.

The Board of Commissioners will immediately begin a search process for a new county manager.
