DUNN, N.C. -

A hotel in Dunn reopened Tuesday afternoon after health officials in Harnett County ordered it to close because of a bedbug problem.

The order came Thursday after health inspectors found concerns about the bedbugs had not been resolved at the Comfort Inn on Bud Hawkins Road

Harnett County Health Director John Rouse said several people complained about bedbugs at the hotel last summer. After each complaint, health inspectors went to the hotel and ordered an extermination. Rouse said each extermination seemed to work for a while, but the bed bug problem recurred until the fall when there were no more complaints.

In May, there was another complaint Rouse said. Investigators discovered remnants of bedbugs in bed frames and windowsills. A health department permit of suspension said bedbug fecal matter was collected on walls and mattresses. The permit also said bedbug exoskeletons were found in eight rooms on the hotel's first and second floors.

At that time the health department gave the hotel notice that its operating permit may be suspended if the bedbug problem was not fixed permanently. The deadline for resolving the bedbug problem was Thursday, and when inspectors noticed the pests were still in the hotel, they shut down the business.

Rouse said exterminators used heat and chemical treatments to rid the hotel of the pests. He said the hotel was allowed to reopen because exterminators felt confident that the problem has been resolved. Rouse also said he felt management at the hotel was handling the problem better than in previous months.

Rouse said ten rooms would remain closed for about another week because the exterminator wanted to do further treatment in those rooms.
