Company connects college kids to those who need help

Posted: Updated:

A company that links college students who need a job with homeowners who need a helping hand is a prime example of taking a simple idea and turning it into a thriving business.

It's called Sweeps, and the temp agency for college students is the brainchild of a University of North Carolina product, Morris Gelblum.

One of the 500 college students to use Sweeps to find work is Kyle Obermiller. Obermiller has done a variety of work, including painting and moving.

"I'm painting today," he said. "Last job, I helped people move."

This is the second time he has helped Vicky Dunn. The last time, Dunn had Obermiller at her home for some handyman work.

He returned to paint a hallway and paint all the way to the kitchen.

Gelblum started Sweeps after doing odd jobs for cash and assuming other college students needed similar work.

"I needed work in college," Gelblum said. "My friends and I were out helping people move and do yard work."

With the service, Gelblum said, "They get jobs when they want it."

The jobs pay more than $15 an hour, including tips.

While Obermiller is painting, another crew is putting up shelves and organizing closets across town at The Hub, a business incubator on Hillsborough Street.

Morris said the service helps connect students with those in need of help, whether it be manual labor or computer help.

"Whatever someone needs help with, we've got the right person to do it," Gelblum said.
