Alabama's new gun law now in effect

Posted: Updated:
RUSSELL COUNTY, Ala. -

Several new Alabama laws go into effect today, including a new law that expands gun rights.

Some of the changes to the gun law include giving people the rights to:

  • Carry a pistol openly in public without a permit unless the property owner posts a sign at the entrance saying no firearms allowed
  • Store a pistol in their vehicle at work, as long the gun is kept secured and out of sight
  • Transport a pistol in their car without a permit if it is unloaded and out of reach

The law also requires a sheriff to approve a pistol permit within 30 days or justify why not.

The law's sponsor, Republican Sen. Scott Beason of Gardendale, says he doesn't expect much different than what people have been doing already. An opponent of the new law, Democratic Rep. Barbara Boyd of Anniston, said she's concerned it may lead to more incidents like the Trayvon Martin shooting.

The law also lowers the age to get a concealed weapon permit to 18.
