TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -

The Alabama Crimson Tide hit the field for the first practice of the 2013 season Friday morning.

Nick Saban's crew practiced for two hours in shells starting at 9:30 a.m. CT.

At his first post-practice news conference of the season, Saban sounded like a coach glad to have the season close.

"We're really happy to get started," he said. "I think there's only so much offseason, summer conditioning that players can do, and we certainly are happy to welcome our team back and excited about the opportunities that they have to create an identity for themselves as a team."

Speaking of summer conditioning, the Tide head coach said this team came back in the best shape of any team during his time in Tuscaloosa.

"This is the most guys we've had pass the conditioning test coming off a summer conditioning program," he said. "This is the least amount of failures, whichever way you want to look at it, that we've ever had, so that's a good thing."

Alabama has 28 practices remaining before the season opener, Aug. 31 against Virginia Tech.
