Malzahn leads first fall practice at Auburn

Posted: Updated:

They keep telling us it is a new day at Auburn. Friday, they got to show it in the first day of fall practice.

Gus Malzahn had a plan and a purpose for his first fall practice as Auburn's Head Coach. He wanted to let the veteran players set the pace early in practice.

"We really let them get out there and try to show the younger guys the pace and expectations," Malzahn said. "Then, halfway through, we did some special teams. The second part of practice, we really slowed things down. We really tried to spend quality time with our young guys."

Auburn has said it is a new day for the team. But, last year is still motivating the players.

"Just how we started off last year and how we finished the season," said defensive back Jonathon Mincy. "We definitely have a chip on our shoulder. We just want to go out there and prove to everybody that we can be a great team."

Players say the atmosphere is different than the past. And they credit their new head coach who is very familiar to the experienced players.

"Everybody loves Coach Malzahn and has a lot of respect for him," said defensive tackle Jeffrey Whitaker. "That is one of the things I think is a plus for him. Coming back to a situation and coming back to Auburn, you already have the older guys that have the respect and love for him."

Kiehl Frazier and Jonathan Wallace are now competing with Nick Marshall and Jeremy Johnson for the open quarterback job. Coach Malzahn had to decide to split the reps.

"Pretty equal. The first part of practice, we let the two older guys that went through spring, we let our two new guys sit back and kind of watch. The second part, the two new guys got all the reps. I'd say overall it was pretty equal between the four of them all day," Malzahn said.
