The weekend before school starts marks the time of the year when parents rush to the store to stock up on school supplies. But for some families, like the Quivors, who have four kids in school and are on a tight budget, it's hard.
That's where the organization "Reach 4 Your Dreamz" steps in.
"We're trying to make sure children have school supplies, we understand there are families out there who just don't have the money to get out there and buy school supplies," says "Reach 4 Your Dreamz" spokesperson Deonta Blount.
The organization handed out school supplies to families and provided meals at their back to school event Sunday afternoon. They also emphasized the importance of school.
"We want to show them there are people trying to give them a positive message and show them that school is the way and there are people out there who are trying to get them where they want to go in life," says Blount.
Nearly 20 percent of Muscogee County is below poverty level, which is higher than the state average, according to Census Statistics. Many of them are families with school-aged children. "Reach 4 Your Dreams'" is trying to combat this statistic and says it starts with education.
It's about helping people take steps that they need to get things accomplished, sometimes you have to start with step 1, which is finding the resources," says Blount.
Jada Quiovers says she wants to be a nurse one day. She starts the 11th grade on Wednesday and now, with all her school supplies, she's one step closer to achieving that goal.
